Greece - the Old Place

Writer: Timothy McDaneldTimothy McDaneld

After our visit to Egypt we decided to go to Greece for a while. We started in Crete which is an island off of mainland Greece. In Crete we stayed in an AirBnB. One rainy gloomy day we decided to get ice cream. On the way to the ice cream place we had to cross the dock. The water was high and spilled onto the dock. We had to stop and run and try  to dodge the waves. Finally we got to the ice cream place and got our ice cream. On the way back we took a different route to avoid the dock. The way back wasn't as windy as out on the dock but it was still gushing rain. Finally we got back. The first thing we did was each take a hot shower. Then we watched The Gods Must Be Crazy which was a funny movie about African bushmen.

After that we went to Athens which  is the capital of Greece. There we spent about a week. Athens was also the capital of ancient Greece. The name Athens came from Athena the Greek god of  wisdom, war, craft and reason. In mythology Poseidon and Athena were competing for Athens. To win the city each one would give a gift to the Atheneans and they would decide who would be the god of the city. Poseidon presented water but it was salty and useless. But Athena gave them the olive tree which they could use for many things like sports, rituals and health, so the city was named after her. While we were in Athens we visited the parthenon. The parthenon is the temple to Athena. The parthenon sits atop the holy rock. The holy rock is more like a holy mountain. Below the parthenon there was the Dionysus theater which was the first theater in the world. To the other side was Areopagus, the meeting place of the greeks. Areopagus was their own kind of court where they decided the punishments for murder and stealing. They also discussed other topics at Areopagus like ideas and theories. In the Acropolis there used to be a giant statue of Athena that was covered in gold and other rich materials. There was a balcony that people could go on at her eye level so they could look her in the eye and ask for something. But sadly the christians came and destroyed the statue and turned the parthenon into a church. We also visited Socrates's jail where he was locked up for thinking differently from the public and having ideas that they didn't like, for example he said that he thought that the earth rotated around the sun not that the sun rotated around the earth. Eventually they forced him to drink poison and he died.

While we were there we went to a museum of  optical illusions which was really cool. They had one room that was a tunnel with the walls spinning so it made you feel like you were spinning not the wall. And others like making a small object bigger than a normal object by putting it closer but so you cant tell. We also did a mystery city thing where you are given a book and other things to help you find the lost library of Alexandria.

We also visited the Averof ship which was a battleship that fought in WW1 and WW2. After WW2 they decided to turn the ship into a floating museum. Inside the ship they had lots of information about the ship and the war it was in. They had one picture of the top of a ship  and you could see the turrets/guns under the water. The ship had about 6 or so levels: the first was the main deck, the second was barracks and meeting places, the third was more sleeping places, the fourth and fifth were for loading the guns and the sixth was for storing ammunition. There were about six turrets, two big and four small.

After Athens we went to Hydra which is a small island off the mainland. Hidra is said to be a no car island. But since we weren't there during high season they had one or two going about each day. In Hydra we stayed in AirBnB which had two rooms, one with a two person bed and the other with two one person beds. There was a kitchen, two bathrooms and a family room. The best part where that came with free chocolate and that right outside our door was the cat club. The cat club was a place where certain cats liked to hang out. The cats on Hydra had little meeting spots that slept during the night and just hung around there during the day. There were a LOT of stray cats on Hydra. People on Hidra left food and water for the cats and some had even built little houses for the cats to sleep in. Hydra was a very peaceful island  unlike Athens with the roaring and honking of cars which made a lot of sense to me to have a partially no wheel island. We took a big ferry to Hydra and ended up in the main town. From the main town we took a taxi boat to the next town over which was where we were staying. While we were on Hydra we did some hiking and testing bakeries which was my favorite activity because it was just an excuse to eat pastries. We also watched a movie and ate popcorn. Then sadly we got on the fairy to go back to Athens. In Athens we spent one day in an apartment and then Mom and Neil went to Mexico to bike with his friend and Dad and I went to Koh Tao wic is in Thailand to get me scuba certified but that is another story for another day. In the end Greece is a great  place to visit on vacation or on the holidays. So now I conclude this blog post by saying Yippeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!! Me is now done with bog post hooray hooray!!!!
