I have No Hopes or Dreams

Yes, you read that correctly. I have no hopes or dreams. That might be an odd thing to say given that we are on an amazing adventure, but it's true. Why is this, you might ask? There's one simple reason - the subjunctive. You see, we started our time in Peru with two weeks of Spanish school. For Carol and the boys, this was easy. For me...it was a bit rougher. The boys go to a bilingual school and already speak great Spanish. Carol already has far more polished Spanish than I do. For me, well, it's another matter. I started my two weeks at a much more basic level, and only barely got into the past tense by the end. In fact, I never got to the subjunctive version of the past tense. The problem here is that subjunctive is the form of past tense used in Spanish to describe hopes and dreams. Since I never got that far, I don't know how to express them. So, I suppose that means that I don't have any. That said, the present is pretty good, so I suppose I'll just live my life in the present instead.

Other than my failure to keep up with the rest of the family, the remainder of Spanish school was a lot of fun. We met some nice people and the school, had a bunch of fun activities such as dinner out, painting toritos (see upcoming post by Tim), and even salsa lessons. Yes, Carol and I went and had a date night humiliating ourselves trying to learn salsa. If it gives you a sense how much older we were than the rest of the scene, I thought they were opening the bar after closing to let us have a lesson. It turns out that we were there before they got the party started for the night.

Me enjoying learning about reflexive verbs

Out to dinner with other students.

What Spanish school felt like...
